Mid Lifer’s Lament…7 questions to turn this around

You are entering your Mid Life years and begin to wonder where your Life has gone. You may have many regrets. More importantly, you are having difficulty seeing a way forward. You have vague dreams of a future that should be better than what you have now.MidLife3

“How do I start to get my Life in better shape?”

Try these questions and see if they will give you a framework on which to build a Life to be proud of…… Be honest, take the time to absorb each question before moving on to the next.

Am I prepared to do what it takes?…..Well, are you? To move forward, changes will need to be made.

Will doing this now make the difference?…..The short answer is “yes”. One more day of regret is one day too much. There may be too much to lose by procrastinating over any change that you need to make. If you are unsure of the change needed, contact someone who can help you.

Do I Love my Life?…..Remember when life was fun? You may need to fall in love with your Life all over again. Do this and the sparks will begin to fly… new, exciting thoughts and actions will follow.

What will happen if I do nothing?…..more lamenting no doubt. Is this what you really want? Doing nothing means things stay the way that they currently are.

How can I make this better?…..by changing what you are doing currently. If your future seems cloudy, change is essential in order to make it clearer. Again, seek help if you can’t find the answers yourself. It’s often difficult doing this on your own.

What will my children think?…..Indeed. Setting a better example will be rewarding in time. Get passionate about your Life and the rewards will be unimaginable.

Can I still be successful?…..Absolutely you can. You are entering a golden period of MidLife12Life. Many successful people didn’t get started until their forties…you can too.

Are these questions helpful? What other questions do you feel would assist?

Feel free to share your thoughts.

Be good to yourselves

To Resolve or not to Resolve?…this is the question that needs to be answered

The New Year beckons. What can we do differently than last year? What can we do better than last Year?…these may well be questions on many people’s lips.

It’s a time to set New Year Resolutions…..or is it?

Some Resolutions will “stick” however many will fail. If you must set resolutions, then set them for the right reasons. Sure, bringing in a New Year seems a pretty good reason. Clear the decks and start afresh… I’m all for that.Positivity images9

However, you can do that anytime. So if the “reason” is simply because it’s a New Year, you are behind the 8 ball right away. And many set ‘resolutions’ to please others, another way to head yourself toward failure. In my opinion, you will need a stronger reason if you want to succeed.

But we are not about “failure” here. We are about success. So our New Years Resolutions should really be about You and Your growth during the coming Year…Maybe like this?… Do you resolve to have a better year than last? Do you resolve to set Goals that will “rock your world? Do you resolve to love like you’ve never loved before? Do you resolve to taking action instead of procrastinating?

So if we must set resolutions/resolve anything that is not working right now, that’s fine. That’s good. That’s healthy. Make them meaningful. Really meaningful and lasting.

Resolving “issues” that directly affect us is meeting these head on. It’s not avoiding. It’s not excusing. It’s simply taking responsibility…and that’s good.

I feel a Big wave of excitement coming for You in 2013…..are You ready to ride it?

Be good to yourselves

How to use “Doubt” to your advantage

Doubt has entered my life recently. This is an uncomfortable feeling. Uncomfortable for two reasons…the first one being that I am usually confident in what do. Secondly, it has me second guessing my every thought and action.

I Believe

Now I am not saying that I’ve never been doubtful before, far from it. This is deeper though. This has the power to strip back my confidence shield.

How do I recover from this?

Firstly, I have acknowledged the presence of doubt. In acknowledging this, I now become aware of this feeling. I must now set out to confront my doubt and turn this around.

The cause…I have been working on some new projects the past few weeks. Things have often not gone to plan and are behind schedule. “Is it meant to be?” I have started to ask. “Doubt” has crept in. Now that seems simple, even innocent enough. It happens to all of us…it’s happened to me often, during my Life.

This time seems different. I sense that it’s a time to re assess. A time for some Self Renewal. A time to re align my Purpose.

In fact, I see many positives coming out of this. Indeed some have come to fruition already. When you doubt yourself it can be coming from lack of confidence, procrastination or a valid reason that the direction I am taking is not the right one for me at THIS moment.

I am now looking at my current situation from a fresh angle. My belief is as strong as ever. My belief in myself is in the knowing that I am able to see ‘the warning signs’ and then make necessary adjustments. The path is not always straight. My Big Picture is still vivid however the steps I am taking toward this have included, some side steps. This is OK.

So when you find that you are doubting yourself (rather than doubting a particular situation), confront it. It’s a message. A message that you need to take notice of if you want to move forward, free from the constraints of ‘doubt’..

It is a time for re assessment. A time for renewal. Finding out the reasons for your self doubt is liberating. It may be difficult to pinpoint this yourself. If so, seek assistance, because having ‘doubt’ as a companion makes the path so much harder to travel.

Be good to yourselves

3 reasons to get your day kickstarted the right way

Coffee helps me start my day. However, that’s only part of the deal.Coffee

Mostly, I am ready to roll. Sure, some caffeine in a cup or two just makes the start to each day that little bit sweeter…but there’s more to my day and yours, than just coffee.

Your day is another opportunity to live. Obvious statement. However what’s not as obvious is the fact that many do not appreciate the gift they have been given. “Just another day” many will groan. This day will not repeat itself. This day has opportunities that you may never see again.

Therefore, this day is unique. This day is a gift that can be only opened once.

Your day is another opportunity to ‘make your mark’ on the world. Step out with Purpose. This day is Yours. Your Goals & Dreams are taking shape and today is another step in the right direction. A direction that will see you achieve what you are seeking.

Your Life has a Purpose, no doubt about it. It is however, your job to find that Purpose…and that’s part of the fun. I believe that your “Purpose” will vary thru Life. Many are seeking their “purpose” like a holy grail…you may be already living your purpose…do what you enjoy and do it with passion!…this day.

Your day is a day to connect. Connect with your inner self. Connect with your family, your friends. A day to connect with and to, like minded individuals. We are all connected in some way on this planet. It’s not blindingly obvious at the moment however isn’t it serendipitous when we do “connect”? Usually completely unexpectedly.

The power of connection is there to grab hold of. When we step into a new day, there are more connections waiting to happen. When we put ourselves out there, each day…..these serendipitous happenings occur.

How do you look forward to each and every day? Love to hear your comments below.

Be good to yourselves

One dose of Excitement…followed by another…and another

I like Excitement. In fact, I am excited about Excitement.

After the previous post when unfortunately Life was sucking a little, it’s time for a rebound!

I see a major challenge for many, including myself at times, is being able to draw excitement even from the most mundane of activities & seemingly boring of moments.

If you truly seek every exciting moment possible then it can be done. I am convinced of that. I wrote a post a little while back where I suggested that you be excited by your Life.

Today we will give our Life some enduring excitement.

Actually, while I think of it…..Your Purpose in Life is to be excited, about your LifeNow that you have found your “calling”, you can get on with it…..and live excitingly.

and this is where it starts. If you have no want to be excited about anything that your life has to offer, then I’m sorry. This story is not for you.

Let us set the scene…What is “excitement”?

It’s likely different things to different people. It may not be jump out of your skin type excitement or a shout it from the roof top type of deal (or may be it is). It could be an inner warmth, a knowing, a tingling sensation.

It may just be satisfaction that all is well. Or a satisfaction in knowing that all will be well, if things are a little off balance for now.

You will probably have your own excitement barometers and that’s fine. Whatever it is, be excited and maintain a vein of excitement throughout everything you do, feel, touch & say. At the end of the day (sorry about the cliche)…….Excitement is an Attitude.

To access this attitude you will need to push aside conflicting attitudes. Like…attitudes of doubt, of procrastination, of fear, of overall negativity.

Excitement is contagious, much like a positive attitude. So passing this excitement along can only be good. It all starts with You. Say “Yes” to excitement.

The recommended dosage of excitement depends upon your need for either an internalised excitement (feeling warm & fuzzy but don’t want anyone else to know) OR externalised excitement (where you are doing hand stands or something similarily outrageous)…..measure accordingly.

Simply take the dosage that is right for you and which maintains your attitude of excitement. The correct dosage, taken daily, will prolong your Life and keep it at the level which you deserve. It will also gladly infect (and affect) those with whom you come in contact.

So who’s with me for having an exciting Life?

be good to yourselves

Self Discovery – an exact science or trial & error?

Self Discovery type questions is by far the most requested search on my blog. I have written two posts specifically on this topic namely 21 Self Discovery Questions to enrich your Mid Life Journey and the brilliantly? named 21 more Self Discovery Questions for the 40+’s to enrich your Mid Life Journey in 2012.

Now let us drill down a bit. The way I look at “self discovery” is by starting with questioning. Simply beginning to question what you are about, what you’ve done in the past, are doing now or the meaning behind what you have done and where you would like to go with your Life, starts you on your Self discovery trail.

Where it ends, well that’s up to you. If you are prepared to continue to question yourself….in a nice way, then you will discover more. The deeper you go, the deeper the discovery.

Do we end up learning all there is to learn about ourselves? …probably not.

Some go on a “quest”…they will literally travel & search the four corners of the earth looking for the missing ingredient(s) in their lives. Searching for more…..knowledge/inner meaning/truth/enlightenment.

Knowledge is a good thing…..you can’t know too much, I feel. It just depends upon what you learn. Is it valuable or is it just stuff?

Many will continue to yearn for more, to discover our inner most secrets. We will read, we will listen, we will look. All this is admirable.

The “science” is in looking in the right places.

I like to know more. This allows me to grow. I have picked up countless pointers that set me off on my trail to discover more.

Some of the ‘pointers’ are simply short phrases or ‘key’ words that make me think in a different way. They usually lead me to more questions, more “what if’s”. I’m no Self discovery junkie’ but it’s refreshing to be able to change my angle on Life at opportune times & therefore discover…..just a little bit more.

I don’t like staleness.

Which leads me to the second part of the heading…..”trial & error”. Yes, life can be like that. You try out something and see if it’s a good fit for you. If it’s not, then you try something else. The key here is that…you must try. I don’t see any use going thru life not knowing who you truly are or what you are really capable of.

“Trial and error” is where the great discoveries have been & will likely always be made.

“…..what you are really capable of”. Just hold that thought. It’s something that I think of quite regularly. What more can I discover about myself (good things only please) that will expand my capabilities? Am I on the verge of “greatness”?…..are we all?

Wanting to know more by whatever means will separate the steppers from the sitters

Whether it’s a quest to the four corners of the earth or to the four corners of your mind, discovery of self is the greatest discovery that we can make. We will probably make a few mistakes here and there. We will continue to read, to listen, to look, to think, to question or we may get fed up and call it quits. Whatever you decide to do…..do it well (and don’t call it quits, I was only kidding).

Tell me what you think. Do you feel that self discovery is an exact science or do you prefer the trial & error method OR perhaps…a combination of the two?

be good to yourselves

Stepping Out

English: Stepping Stones. Stepping stones acro...

…of your comfort zone

…into something new

…to embrace the world

…in style

No matter where, how, when or why you are “stepping out”, I congratulate you.

However, how are you stepping out?

Is it with a great Attitude? Is it with a sense of adventure, of curiosity…is it with boldness or is it with an unease, with caution, perhaps a little fearful?

OR are you rooted to the spot?…if you are stuck to the same spot then you really need to read on.

Taking the first step toward making changes in your Life can be daunting. “Change” can either be accepted or avoided.

If you accept the “change” or shall we call it “challenge”, then that’s the first hurdle overcome. Now, doing something about it…that’s where the ‘steppers’ are separated from the ‘sitters’.

When you truly decide to step out you are in effect, releasing the handbrake on your Life. You know, the one that’s been firmly on, anchoring you in ‘park mode’.

You have now engaged first gear. Again, congratulations.

When you start to step out, the steps may be small…and that’s OK. You may have some hesitancy…and that’s OK.

The difference in continuing to step or shrink back will be largely in your Attitude. A positive Attitude will help you overcome any hesitancy and give you a knowing that further steps will lead you in the best direction and an Attitude that you are tired of getting nowhere…will start you stepping.

True Steppers have Attitude.

Steppers also have these things in common;

  • a sense of adventure
  • they know there is more to be had
  • they don’t like to be tied down
  • aren’t afraid to try something new

I mentioned briefly earlier about “stepping out in Style”. Even the most hesitant of steps or the smallest baby steps can have ‘style’ attached to them. Because steppers know to always put their best foot forward regardless of the type of ‘step’.

True Steppers always have style.

Breaking out of your comfort zone can be daunting. And it would have been daunting for the ancient adventurers of our world breaking free of their homelands to explore far flung lands. These were the steppers of olden days. They stepped, regardless…..and you can too.

True steppers have a sense of adventure.

Stepping out is an art form. The beauty is that anyone can learn. Don’t stand still…start stepping. Please share your stepping adventure in the comments below.

You can Design your very own Mid Life years…You have the Power

If you are aged 40 & over, please read on (others do so at their own risk, but you are welcome anyway).Love your Life

Life is a Journey.

Mid Life is an Adventure.

I’ve said that before and I am proud to say it again.

Join me now for an intimate Mid Life Love fest, just you & me. The adventure is about to begin. I want you to design the best Mid Life that you can imagine.

You deserve it. This is a golden time. Make it count.

Make it last (there’s no end date if you’re having Fun).

I have spoken before about mid-life adventure and also asked questions about mid-life journeys. At the end of the day, I believe it’s all about learning & discovery, having huge amounts of Fun while you are at it And…adding a healthy dose of Purpose.

Here are  a few ‘design ideas’ that you may wish to experiment with to make your Mid Life years stand out.

  • “I have worldly experience to use & to share & to contribute”…..well, what can I design from this? What are my experiences, how can I best use them? I really do have something to offer…my best years are ahead
  • “The questions that have bothered me before are now bringing answers, magically it seems”…..how much more can I learn from further questioning? I can shape my experiences…..and therefore, my Life.
  • “I am developing Greater self awareness…….I have become more aware of who I really am”…..Imagine the potential that I can now release and make use of. I am Me & proud of it. This is My Life to live.
  • “My passion for Life has become more “real”…….I can now taste it, embrace it & touch it”…..the boundaries are being pushed out further & further, my scope is endless. Let me loose, the power is in my hands.
  • “I fit in to my own view of the world”…..the world is my oyster, let’s go harvest a Fun time
  • “Fitness & good health are now top priorities & I can see, feel & enjoy the benefits”…..the Life that I will now be living won’t be interrupted by poor health, the possibilities are endless. I can design anything that I want.
  • “I answer to no one other than myself”…..I make my own ‘design’ rules. I am going to design myself something incredible.
  • “I enjoy my mistakes. Previously I just saw them as ‘mistakes’…….now I know better”…..OK, sometimes I stuff up, maybe a ‘design fault’ here & there. But that’s allright, I’m still learning & that’s part of my journey.
  • “My Imagination has no limits, it often runs wild…….I love it”…..my designs are endless, I can do what I want.

* Admittedly,I am biased.I know that Mid Life is golden.

I also know that it can get away, fast.

* Grab it, hold it, embrace it, feel it, touch it, love it, learn from it…….enjoy it!

What sort of mid life do you wish to design? Don’t be afraid to share.

be good to yourselves

6 key questions you can use to open the door to your Self Discovery

We are amazing ‘creatures of The Universe’ with huge potential & extraordinary personal power. For many however, ‘potential’ remains just that and is often not fully discovered & consequently our personal power becomes diminished.

Abstract Colorful Universe Wallpaper - TTdesign

Abstract Colorful Universe Wallpaper – TTdesign (Photo credit: tomt6788)

To start opening the door to our self discovery involves the asking of questions. This is the best way to learn & discover things in Life. The better the question…the better the chances of greater discovery.

Can you remember when you were early school age?… question upon question, endless discovery thru books, pictures, stories and the like…..and the excitement of it all!

So here’s where You & I
can revisit that
.

Not to go back to “school” but to use schooling technique to open fresh doors to our Life.

We need to continue to ask questions of others and ourselves in order to grow and develop our excitement of new (self) discovery and to tap into our huge wealth of potential…..so, is there something stopping us from doing this?

I am still asking myself questions, new questions, better questions for I have potential that I know is still there to be realised…..and ‘potential’ can be a heavy load to carry, so maybe it’s time to unburden oneself.

Now I’m not a “woo woo” type of guy so some of my questions may appear boring however I believe they will allow you to get to the heart of the matter…..that being You…..and that’s pretty important, don’t you think?

Here’s six questions that I have selected(there are more of course)to get you thinking and hopefully build the excitement of exploration & discovery.

  • Will my current ‘choices’ get me to where I want to be… for example…am I doing the things that I should be doing? Am I saying the things that I should be saying? Do I cut corners when I should be doing that little bit extra? Are the people who I spend time with adding value to me? Am I adding to my happiness or subtracting from it?
  • Do I settle for less than I deserve…for example… Is compromise my first action? Can I try a bit harder? I know that I can do better then why aren’t I?
  • Do I consider myself a Victim of circumstance or do I take personal responsibility for my Lifefor example…is Life just happening to me or am I contributing to my Life? Do I let others make choices for me? Do I stand up for what I believe in? Is it someone else’s fault (again)?
  • What are my top 3 personal Values that I want to live my Life bydo you know your Values? * It is worthwhile completing a “Values Checklist” or similar to determine what values drive you…and then live by them otherwise you will likely be in “conflict”. When you are living in harmony with your values you begin to flow rather than trickle thru Life. * Tim Brownson @ A Daring Adventure is among many things an expert on Core Values. You might want to check out some of his posts or even subscribe to his blog.
  • What’s vitally important to me Nowsounds simple however how many times do we pause & determine this? We may be spending time doing ‘stuff’ that bears no resemblance to what is more like our bigger picture. Spending time on the important things rather than just the urgent ones, will pay off big time.
  • How do I really want to live the rest of my Lifeare you accepting of your current circumstances? or do you want to consider a different set of circumstances for your Life? Time is not our friend…Now may be the time to sort this out

Do you see some value here? What questions would you like to use to open the door to your own Self Discovery? I’d love to hear your comments.

Be good to yourselves

3 Simple Do-able actions that will make all the difference in your Life

Life T-Shirt

Life T-Shirt (Photo credit: Bob.Fornal)

“Life is tough, Life is hard”…..heard that a lot.

In part, there is truth here. However when this message repeats and repeats, it can become fact for many (who don’t know better) who will then believe that everything in Life must be tough and hard.

There are tough and hard parts to our Lives, no mistake.

However in the overall scheme of things, the amount of ‘tough times’ that you experience will mostly come down to your view of your Life and the choices that you make. In other words, Life can be a lot easier, a lot more enjoyable, if you choose a more positive outlook.

I’ve found that focussing on just 3 things helps me maintain my positive outlook.

Life shouldn’t need a ‘rocket science‘ degree to live it. These 3 things may help you as well.

  • Don’t listen to people who constantly tell you negative stuff…..they anchor you down & kill your dreams
  • Say ‘thankyou’ often…..it brings more to you
  • Have a definite idea of where you are going and what you want…..this helps avoid ‘distractions’

Seem too simple? Maybe, however I find that it works & Life can be complicated, so ‘simple’ is good. You may notice some changes for the positive if you try this yourself.
