Living Life Today – 5 Thoughts for a better Life

The Living Life Today series provides a platform to think about your Life as it is Now, enjoy what you have, review and create an even better future for tomorrow….. Short, sharp & easily digestible.

It’s been a while since I posted here however, it’s great to be back. Thinking comes natural to you, however what you think will determine how well your life functions.

Often you go into auto pilot. I know that I do. Now that’s fine if your thoughts are “on track” and are delivering you a tremendous day, week, month. When it all becomes ‘same old, same old’ … you know, as boring as last night’s re-heated dinner … then your thoughts need a shake up.

Here’s a few thought ideas that may help:

Think Fresh … You will get stale from time to time. Stre-e-e-tch the box that you are Thoughts13currently in and explore different thoughts in fresh pastures.

Think Positive … we receive what we think. When you continually think of the ‘poor stuff’ and all things negative, that’s what you will mainly get. Flip to the other side and look on the brighter/richer side of life … and you will receive more brighter/richer kinds of things and people into your Life.

Think “Outrageous” … dull and boring is just that. Break the cycle and go a little crazy … legal crazy that is. A good shake up from time to time does wonders.

Think Imaginatively … again, stretch that mind of yours. Burst the bubble and go for broke. Look what’s been created in this world with a heavy dose of imagination.

Think without fear … if you worry that your thoughts are breaking some kind of ‘taboo’ then you will retreat to safety … which is likely to be thinking what you have always thought. You know that comfy, I won’t take a risk type of thinking. If you want the same results day in , day out then be comfortable. If you want different, better results then forget the fear and let your thoughts take you to new places, new adventures.

Be good to yourself

3 reasons to get your day kickstarted the right way

Coffee helps me start my day. However, that’s only part of the deal.Coffee

Mostly, I am ready to roll. Sure, some caffeine in a cup or two just makes the start to each day that little bit sweeter…but there’s more to my day and yours, than just coffee.

Your day is another opportunity to live. Obvious statement. However what’s not as obvious is the fact that many do not appreciate the gift they have been given. “Just another day” many will groan. This day will not repeat itself. This day has opportunities that you may never see again.

Therefore, this day is unique. This day is a gift that can be only opened once.

Your day is another opportunity to ‘make your mark’ on the world. Step out with Purpose. This day is Yours. Your Goals & Dreams are taking shape and today is another step in the right direction. A direction that will see you achieve what you are seeking.

Your Life has a Purpose, no doubt about it. It is however, your job to find that Purpose…and that’s part of the fun. I believe that your “Purpose” will vary thru Life. Many are seeking their “purpose” like a holy grail…you may be already living your purpose…do what you enjoy and do it with passion!…this day.

Your day is a day to connect. Connect with your inner self. Connect with your family, your friends. A day to connect with and to, like minded individuals. We are all connected in some way on this planet. It’s not blindingly obvious at the moment however isn’t it serendipitous when we do “connect”? Usually completely unexpectedly.

The power of connection is there to grab hold of. When we step into a new day, there are more connections waiting to happen. When we put ourselves out there, each day…..these serendipitous happenings occur.

How do you look forward to each and every day? Love to hear your comments below.

Be good to yourselves

Living Life Today – Are You living in the Shadows?

“The Living Life Today series provides a platform to think about your Life as it is Now, enjoy what you have, review and create an even better future for tomorrow….. Short, sharp & easily digestible.

So many people spend their lives with their talents hidden from view.

I call this “living in the shadows”. Talents hidden from view. A place of doubt, indecision & fear.

We are here to shine and by shining, we are helping others… as well as ourselves.

Our choices determine the lives we lead.

You are where you currently are ….by choice.  If you are currently ‘in the shadows’, you can choose to come out and live a life of brightness and vitality. You may need help to do this. Help is always close at hand, just ask.

Choose to live a Life where you can be seen and be heard. A life where you can share yourself with others and where you can grow.

A life where you can learn from others. A life where you can inspire, motivate and care…..and be inspired, motivated and cared about.

My friends, fellow Life Lovers…..Dream big, aim high, develop your Big Picture, embrace your Life, choose well… and shine.

Be good to yourselves

Momentum & Clarity…what it means in the Bigger picture of Life

Some start fast, some start slow & steady. Full of ideas and enthusiasm. Energy bursting out everywhere or being slowly released in focus-like fashion.

From either angle there comes a tipping point where the energy, enthusiasm, action needs to be maintained. Maintained in such a way that it simply rolls along with barely a blip or hindrance…..giving you Momentum.

I have found that a basic fundamental from which to build Momentum is a strong base. An anchor point.

When you can anchor yourself in certainty, you can then begin your move forward.

That anchor can be a number of things. For example… It may be confidence in your ability. It may be drawing on a previous success or successes. It may be financial. It may be support from your network, family or friends. It may be a key word or phrasewhatever it is that will trigger you into action and have you stay there.

Not only can you now move forward, you can also draw back on this anchor, if times become a bit tough down the track. Let me explain what I mean.

Mostly our intentions are good. We have our goal/s set, we are enthused. We set out to achieve. Along the way our focus may be distracted thru any number of issues. Some of these we cannot avoid, some we can. In all likelihood we become a little overwhelmed and frustrated by our lack of progress.

Now we need to deal with these distractions so we can get back on track. And getting back on track is what you need to do. Your momentum has been disrupted. This is where we can reach for our anchor point if you find it difficult to get going again. Remember, your anchor point is good not evil. It’s a point of confidence which enables you to get rolling again.

When I talk about distractions your momentum becomes disrupted as I said earlier. There may be a 2nd culprit at play here. As I said, some distractions can’t be avoided. Deal with them & get back on the horse. However if you are lacking in clarity then all the good work you have done will grind to a halt at some point regardless of what other (good) measures you have in place.

It’s fine to be enthused and start taking action on the goals you have set. If you haven’t got a clear purpose or bigger picture on what these goals mean to you then your enthusiasm will likely fizzle out.

And being clear is largely driven by… Meaning. This in my opinion is the single biggest contributor to successful achievement of goals. There’s meaning to it. Sufficient meaning to drive us forward. Lack of sufficient meaning has us asking questions of ourselves …questions of doubt.

So when you set out on your goals, check the “meaning barometer” firstly. Will the goal/s add value to you/to others? Is it strong enough to make you do everything to see it thru? Then make sure that your ‘base’ is firm…you have your anchor/s in place.

If it passes this test then you are off to a terrific start which should then progress to a successful achievement.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

be good to yourselves

Stepping Out

…of your comfort zone

…into something new

…to embrace the world

…in style

No matter where, how, when or why you are “stepping out”, I congratulate you.

However, how are you stepping out?

Is it with a great Attitude? Is it with a sense of adventure, of curiosity…is it with boldness or is it with an unease, with caution, perhaps a little fearful?

OR are you rooted to the spot?…if you are stuck to the same spot then you really need to read on.

Taking the first step toward making changes in your Life can be daunting. “Change” can either be accepted or avoided.

If you accept the “change” or shall we call it “challenge”, then that’s the first hurdle overcome. Now, doing something about it…that’s where the ‘steppers’ are separated from the ‘sitters’.

When you truly decide to step out you are in effect, releasing the handbrake on your Life. You know, the one that’s been firmly on, anchoring you in ‘park mode’.

You have now engaged first gear. Again, congratulations.

When you start to step out, the steps may be small…and that’s OK. You may have some hesitancy…and that’s OK.

The difference in continuing to step or shrink back will be largely in your Attitude. A positive Attitude will help you overcome any hesitancy and give you a knowing that further steps will lead you in the best direction and an Attitude that you are tired of getting nowhere…will start you stepping.

True Steppers have Attitude.

Steppers also have these things in common;

  • a sense of adventure
  • they know there is more to be had
  • they don’t like to be tied down
  • aren’t afraid to try something new

I mentioned briefly earlier about “stepping out in Style”. Even the most hesitant of steps or the smallest baby steps can have ‘style’ attached to them. Because steppers know to always put their best foot forward regardless of the type of ‘step’.

True Steppers always have style.

Breaking out of your comfort zone can be daunting. And it would have been daunting for the ancient adventurers of our world breaking free of their homelands to explore far flung lands. These were the steppers of olden days. They stepped, regardless…..and you can too.

True steppers have a sense of adventure.

Stepping out is an art form. The beauty is that anyone can learn. Don’t stand still…start stepping. Please share your stepping adventure in the comments below.

3 Power packed ways to take positive action (when you haven’t a clue what to do)

This is a re-post of mine from last year with some additions/alterations. Hope you (still) enjoy…..

Warning! This is a Coaching post. It’s brief, there’s no mucking around, it’s straight to the point…(which is my intent  with most of my posts).

Further warning! Some of this language may offend or even worse, for my International friends, be too Australian (if that’s possible). There is some attempted humour but mostly it’s serious…….

Metaphorically speaking, if you are swimming against the tide, treading water, spinning your wheels, up sh*t creek without a paddle…you obviously need to take some action to get going forward & get out of this predicament.

Before you can start…….

You first need to Gain Traction

then ‘step by step’

build Momentum…..

Let’s identify what these steps really mean…..

“Traction” = stop the slide, gain some grip, shore up your defences, plug the gaps, review your ‘battle plan’, build a base, initiate thought processes

Often when I am coaching clients who have found themselves “on the slide”, I ask them to visualise the last time they tasted success, anchor themselves to that point…then commence the building process.

“Step by Step” = one foot in front of the other, constant movement, thought supported by action, never give up, keep punching, “motion with motivation”

It’s often the small steps which count the most. Especially in the stages of recovery from sliding or being frozen stuck. Just making those steps, with persistence is critical to you making any longer term gains.

“Momentum” = success thoughts colliding with action, on a roll, unbeatable, it’s all downhill from here, effortless motion, well oiled machine

Having “momentum” is where it’s at Life Lovers. When we build and maintain Momentum then there is No holding us back.

These three “steps” may seem simple, in fact they are. I’ve found (and you may have too) that often the simple things, the blindingly obvious, are the ones oft overlooked or not even sighted……they elude our personal radar.

When you find yourself on the slide & you will at some stage, step back & look for some traction. Something that will give you some grip & leverage from which to move forward.

Once again, using the details above…….

When you put your traction in place, you can then start moving step by step, continually motivating yourself to keep going.

This will in turn, build your momentum…….

You are on your way (again).

Does this make any sense to You? I’d love to hear your comments.

Before you do, please check out the latest posts from these 2 blogging friends of mine. I had FUN reading them, you may as well.

“Expectations”…Realistic or Unrealistic ?…Good or Bad?

“Expectation” is a word that can fill you with joy

and also fill you with dread.

The expectation that you put on yourself can be spine tingling or nerve numbing.

The expectations that others place upon you can have the same effect however tend to weigh much more heavily because…..they aren’t YOUR expectations.

…which would you rather have?

Personal expectations…the ones that come from us… are largely “drivers”. They get us going, reaching out, pushing us along. They come from within and contain a ‘knowing’ that we can do more.

We set goals, have aspirations, dreams and expect that good things will come of our efforts.

‘External expectations’ come from a variety of sources. Your coach, your mentor, family, team members, friends and of course the big daddy (or momma) of them all…..the expectations of your nation (the Olympics are a current great example of this).

Now largely, these external expectations are borne from your own ‘performance’ in Life. People can see that you are doing great & want (expect)  that to continue OR you are not doing so great & want (expect) you to improve. This can be said of both sport and Life in general.

It’s something that ‘comes with the territory’ however really nothing that we can control to any great extent because they aren’t your expectations.

Personal expectation is the one that we have greater control over.

We can either expect very little or a great deal. We can be realistic about this by viewing our past & present ‘performance’ & making valued judgements about what we expect by way of improvement. We can also be “realistic” and do absolutely nothing…commonly called ‘low expectation’.

We can also follow the same line of thought and be completely unrealistic. We can expect way beyond our capabilities based on comparison with others. If we are not comparing within reason, then the pressure to reach the unrealistic will be unbearable.

Which will set you up for Failure.

So the way I see expectation, is simply to expect to do your best. Expect to dream your best dream, kick your best goal and live your best Life.

No more, no less.

And they have to be your dreams, your goals and….. you must be living your Life.

Do you have expectations that are unrealistic place upon you? or are your own expectations unrealistic? Please share your expectations in the comments below.

be good to yourselves

I am stepping thru Life, mostly forward.

However there are times when my steps become heavy. Like walking thru thick thigh deep mud. It’s an effort to raise my legs for another step.

Must rest.

Effort it seems, does not always bring “reward”.

Does this sound familiar to you? The steps you take appear to be getting you nowhere?

Do you then Stop and go no further, give up?

I had an illumination a while back and realisedthat the Reward is really in the Effort.

Now when I rest, it is to review the path and see how far I have come. All those ‘efforts’, those steps…I have come a fair way indeed.

And when I see that, I reward myself. A self congratulatory ‘pat on the back’, some positive silent self talk, the occasional yell of delight.

When you rest, try spending a few minutes checking your path well worn. How far have you come? Is your path straight and narrow, winding, full of detours, U-turns or are you back to where you started?

My shoes are well worn now. Though I can always get another pair.

This is the effort. My shoes are a metaphor for all those efforts that I have put in. When my efforts seem exhausted, I can dig deep for some more (get another pair of shoes).

And I can say that my path has had it’s fair share of detours, U-turns and winds. However I believe I have come far…and that pleases me. I realise also that I have far to go.

There is a ‘destination’. I can make it out in the distance, beyond the hills and valleys but I can see it. This pleases me.

This is the choice that you have and have always had. Keep wearing the same pair of shoes, keep them nice & clean, wear them only on certain days of the week and stay where you are in Life OR

wear them out with effort…moving yourself forward…step by step and getting somewhere with your Life.

Keep stepping Life Lovers.

Living Life Today – Don’t sit back, just make a Start

The Living Life Today series provides a platform to think about your Life as it is Now, enjoy what you have, review and create an even better future for tomorrow”….. Short, sharp & easily digestible.

You are sitting around wondering what to do (next). There’s a lot that you know that you probably should do and a lot that you want to do… but where to start?

And that’s the thing…making a start.

What type of excuse can I come up with not to start?

Now you are probably not thinking that directly. However your thoughts will most likely be hijacked without your permission and you will not start what you (perhaps) intentioned to do.

Distractions, procrastination, poor prioritisation all contribute to “non starting” a project, task or commencing action toward a goal…or even creating a goal.

It could be fear of failure (we’ve heard that little phrase often) or one of many other “fears” that dwell inside of us.

The Bigger picture of Life demands your involvement. It beckons you to join in and contribute in whatever way that you can…..it is waiting for you to just make a start.

Anything, any action no matter how small or seemingly insignificant will get you moving. We’ve all no doubt heard about “baby steps”. I’m suggesting even to think about the baby steps is making a start…

It all starts with a thought…don’t let it slip away.

Don’t worry about what comes next, just begin. And you know what, when the thoughts start to percolate, momentum begins to build and before you know it, you are on your way.

So, when you commit your thought processes to taking action, whether that be say, writing down the first words of a plan or perhaps making a call for some advice or guidance, then you are making a start.

What to do next? Well, I’ll cover that in the next instalment of “Living Life Today”.

Today, I just want you to make a start…get excited…you Can do it!

Be good to yourselves

David
